HTML not XML ============ http://www.damowmow.com/playground/html-not-xml.html This is a supporting document mentioned in the following www-talk post: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-talk/2001MarApr/0085.html It shows that you can't reliably sniff for XML documents sent as text/html. This document is HTML, not XHTML. Yet the W3C validator incorrectly assumed it was XHTML. The validator has since been corrected to treat this as HTML 4.0 Strict: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.damowmow.com%2Fplayground%2Fhtml-not-xml.html&doctype=Inline See also a new document I wrote once the validator was fixed: http://www.damowmow.com/playground/html-not-xml-2.html This is an even more pathological case that is also valid HTML, and which even the new validator incorrectly assumes is XHTML. This issue is recorded in the public W3C bugs database: http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=14 -- ian@hixie.ch
